Materials processing with a tightly focused femtosecond laser vortex pulse.

In this Letter we present the first (to our knowledge) demonstration of material modification using tightly focused single femtosecond laser vortex pulses. Double-charge femtosecond vortices were synthesized with a polarization-singularity beam converter based on light propagation in a uniaxial anisotropic medium and then focused using moderate- and high-NA optics (viz., NA=0.45 and 0.9) to abl...

construction and validation of translation metacognitive strategy questionnaire and its application to translation quality

like any other learning activity, translation is a problem solving activity which involves executing parallel cognitive processes. the ability to think about these higher processes, plan, organize, monitor and evaluate the most influential executive cognitive processes is what flavell (1975) called “metacognition” which encompasses raising awareness of mental processes as well as using effectiv...

Femtosecond Laser Processing of Nitinol

The effects of femtosecond laser machining on surface characteristics and subsurface microstructure of a Nitinol alloy were studied. The femtosecond laser machining produced an average surface roughness of 0.2 μm. A re-deposited layer of 7 μm and a hardened layer of 70 μm were also resulted from the machining.

Femtosecond-laser interactions with transparent materials: applications in micromachining and supercontinuum generation

Femtosecond-lasers represent a source for electric field pulses which can have field intensities approaching and even exceeding the atomic binding field. For an electric field of this order, the polarization response of the medium changes from linear to nonlinear. In transparent media, depending on the field intensity, the laser pulse is either nonlinearly absorbed or, at lower field intensitie...
